Alone in seeing clearly?

On the axis: Relation to certainty · my conviction against others

When everyone thinks the opposite of me, is it a sign that I am wrong, or is the clear-sighted one sometimes alone against the crowd: how far should I defer to others' judgment?

For a few years now, in the neighbourhood where you grew up, cases of one same illness have been multiplying, far beyond what chance would explain. The factory nearby swears it has nothing to do with it, and an official report backs it up. But a researcher who long worked for the factory now claims that the inconvenient measurements were left out of the file; her documents, her figures, your own memories of the acrid smells and the oily sheen on the stream, it all fits together. The more pieces you gather, the more the official account looks like a cover-up. If you are right, powerful people are lying to protect their interests, and almost no one around you wants to see it. What do you do with this conviction?
