Indifference to opinion

The Cynics made it their profession to owe nothing to others' regard: neither shame nor praise dictated their conduct, only what they judged in accordance with nature. To hold this stance is to stop measuring your acts by the approval they gather, and to take back from the crowd the power you had let it hold over you. Reputation becomes one external good among others, which you do not refuse but no longer depend on.
