holds happiness to be negative: pleasure is only the cessation of a pain, and we feel neither our health, nor the roof that shelters us, nor the misfortunes that spare us, so long as they are present. Hence a counsel of wisdom: instead of counting what we lack, learn to notice the ills that, at this moment, are spared us. It is the surest way to be a little less unhappy.
